Bern: Rail operator BLS moves 900 jobs to Europaplatz

The railroad company BLS is merging its three office locations in Bern at Europaplatz. The approximately 900 employees are moving to the "Forum West".

BLS plans to move into its new space in mid-2025. The main motive for the move is to reduce rental costs, especially by taking up less space at the new location, the company says. Today, the railroad's office employees work in buildings on the Bollwerk, Genfergasse and Sägemattstrasse in Köniz. The property on Genfergasse belongs to BLS and is expected to be rented out after the railroad employees move out. At Bollwerk, the lease expires at the end of 2025 anyway.

The previous tenant at Europaplatz, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), is moving into a new federal administration building in Zollikofen.

In a statement, BLS emphasizes that the Ausserholligen area is considered a development focus of the city of Bern. The Bern University of Applied Sciences, for example, is planning its new campus for several departments there. The city's energy supplier EWB is also building three high-rise buildings in the area and locating its headquarters in one of them. Residential buildings are also being constructed. (aw)
