St. Gallen: University rents house Washington
Helvetia Insurance leases the Washington House to the University of St. Gallen as a single tenant from April 2024.

Haus Washington, a striking example of neo-Baroque architecture at Rosenbergstrasse 20-22 in St. Gallen, just opposite the main train station, is getting a prominent tenant. From the beginning of April 2024, the University of St. Gallen will take over the building, which is currently being renovated and has a total of 6,000 square meters of floor space, from its owner Helvetia Versicherungen for an initial period of 15 years. In the future, the university will use the Washington building as a training and office building.
The lease agreement between Helvetia and the University of St.Gallen stipulates that, in the course of the renovation work currently underway, the interior fit-out of around 6,000 sqm of rental space will also be adapted to the user-specific needs of the university. By renting this space, the university will have the opportunity to meet its need for additional space in a central city location.
With this lease, the university is consistently implementing the real estate strategy it has been pursuing for several years: it is selling off small rental properties in favor of larger, contiguous spaces. The lease agreement is coordinated with the commissioning of the Platztor campus. (bw)
