The Immofonds owns the properties 63/63a and 65 in Basel in the immediate vicinity of the SBB railroad station on the main traffic axis Nauenstrasse. A new concept was sought for the property, which previously housed office and commercial space, in an overall performance competition. The focus was on making the best possible use of the plots while maximizing the proportion of residential space. Of the five invited teams, the proposal by Miller&Maranta and Gross Generalunternehmung AG came out on top.

The design of the winning project provides for an extension to the historic "Handelshof Nauenstrasse" from the 1930s. The two-storey Nauenstrasse 65, on the other hand, will make way for a new building that complements the Handelshof. The concept is praised for its careful handling of the existing structure. Its vertical access will be used to reach the new floors above. A pergola circulation system in the inner courtyard area will ensure distribution between the floors, the report continues. The floor plans have been very carefully designed and allow for diverse and flexible living arrangements. (aw)
