With the "Argoviarena" project, the municipality of Aarau and Halter AG want to build a new indoor sports and event hall on the site of the current Schachenhalle.

The current Schachenhalle was opened in 1969 and, according to the city, requires a renovation of around CHF 20 million. The Argoviarena could provide a contemporary replacement, according to Aarau. The hall could be cross-financed through a shell use with owner-occupied apartments and transferred to the operating company for a symbolic franc.

The new Argoviarena will be used for sporting events and functions. In addition to handball - the current Schachenhalle is the venue for HSC Suhr Aarau - this could also include other sports such as basketball, volleyball, indoor football and floorball, according to the city. The hall will also serve as an event location for concerts, general meetings, congresses and festive events. The existing school uses will also be retained. The new arena will have a seating capacity of around 2,000 in sports mode, with a further 1,000 seats in the hall floor for other events.

To finance the hall, a decentralized shell use with apartments is planned. In an initial project phase, it will be clarified, among other things, which properties are suitable for this and how a building lease could be structured. (ah)
