Zurich: Planning for new Dock A at the airport becomes concrete
Flughafen Zürich AG wants to replace its Dock A with a new building. The planning approval procedure for the project is now starting.
After more than 35 years in operation, Dock A with the current control tower at Zurich Airport is to be replaced. Flughafen Zürich AG is planning to build a new dock to the north of the current Dock A. Last year's project competition was won by the "Raumfachwerk" project from a planning team led by BIG, HOK and 10:8 Architekten: The new airport dock is to be built largely from wood - a unique feature for a terminal building of this type, according to the airport company at the time.
The plan is to equip the entire roof of the new dock and the so-called dock root with photovoltaics. This could cover two thirds of the building's annual electricity requirements. The interior is intended to increase the quality of the passenger experience: New stores and restaurants are planned in the dock root - as well as in the adjacent Airside Center. There will also be large lounge areas with a view of the apron.
The Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) has started the planning approval procedure for the project: The plans are open to the public from November 16 to December 15. According to earlier information, construction is due to start in 2030. Flughafen Zürich AG estimated the investment for the new Dock A, including the new tower and the dock root, at CHF 700 million last year. (ah)
