Bern: Plans for Gaswerk site take shape

An indicative project is now available for the development of the Gaswerk site, the second largest ongoing urban development project in Bern after Viererfeld/Mittelfeld.

The Gaswerk site, currently the second-largest urban development project in Bern, is to be built over with a mixed-use development with a residential component of at least 60% according to the city's plans.

The indicative project, a further development of the winning project "Downtown Gastown" from 2021The plans include urban apartments in the northern part of the site and family-friendly apartments in the south in a natural environment, with the focus on affordable housing. The first floors of the buildings in the north and in the Ryff factory will be used for workspaces and services.

The buildings are to be built and let mainly by non-profit developers and the city itself.

In terms of planning law, the Gaswerk site will be zoned as a zone with planning obligation (ZPP). The ZPP is to be publicly submitted at the beginning of 2024 and submitted to the voters in 2025. Construction of the new urban quarter can begin in 2028 at the earliest. (ah)
