Basel: New terminal for the Euro-Airport

With an investment volume of CHF 85 million, the airport is planning an extensive terminal project.

The extension on the so-called landside of the terminal with an additional 14,000 square meters of floor space is intended to eliminate the current bottlenecks and make waiting more pleasant for passengers. A new spacious waiting area is planned in the passport control area, where it is relatively cramped today, and more catering and shopping facilities are planned in the arrivals area. The security checks, which are currently spread across three areas, are to be brought together in a new building to increase efficiency and visibility. "This expansion is a decisive step towards increasing the quality of service for passengers. The focus is on improving quality. However, no additional gates or aircraft stands are planned," says Matthias Suhr, Director of Euro-Airport.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027; the airport expects to open in 2030. EuroAirport and the Basel Chamber of Commerce are confident that the project will not only modernize the airport, but will also provide a significant boost for the Basel region - as it is well known that investments in infrastructure expansion generally promote local employment and offer new business opportunities.

The airport had already announced a major investment of over CHF 250 million in 2019, which was canceled due to the pandemic. In order to be able to react more flexibly to the unpredictable development in passenger traffic, the original major project has now been divided into modular sub-projects that can be implemented independently of each other depending on developments.
