The canton of Solothurn wants to rent less space for administrative purposes and has proclaimed the strategy "Own before rent". According to its own figures, it currently spends over CHF 6 million per year on rental payments.

In the city of Solothurn, where more than half of the 1,800 employees of the cantonal administration currently work in rented properties, the canton wants to build a central administration building in the continuation of the current Rötihof on Werkofstrasse. Official and specialist offices are to be brought together in one place.

The canton launched an architectural competition for the project, and twelve firms were selected from 64 applications to take part in the competition, including Diener & Diener and Christ & Gantenbein from Basel, Aebi & Vincent Architekten from Bern and Drees & Sommer in a consortium with Herzog & de Meuron.

According to the canton, the offices are to come up with solutions for a functional, contemporary and sustainable administrative building. The winning project should be available by the end of 2024. (ah)
