Zurich: Planning for Josefs-Areal takes longer

The planning loan for the 20,000 square meter municipal property is increased and the architectural competition is held more than four years late.

Zurich City Council is increasing funding for the planning of the two-hectare Josef site between Viadukt and Hardbrücke. According to a press release, the aim is to create the highest possible level of acceptance for the project. "Whether it's a neighborhood park, indoor swimming pool, health center for the elderly, apartments for the elderly, work yard and rooms for the neighborhood: there is still a high and proven need for all of them," writes the city council. It is now necessary to clarify in detail "whether and, if so, how many additional non-profit apartments and commercial premises can be accommodated on the Josef site in an acceptable manner and how these uses can be made possible under planning law", it says. In addition, a zoning order for Josefstrasse would have to be examined from a planning perspective.

The revision of the development concept for the Josef site will reportedly take until the end of 2027. The architectural competitions are therefore likely to start around four and a half years later than originally planned. One new interim use has been decided: in 2025, "Josy", a "Center for Circular Economy", is to be added.
