Zurich: Fashion store opens on Bahnhofstrasse
After the traditional store Grieder had to leave its headquarters on Paradeplatz, it opened on 4,000 square meters at the upper end of Bahnhofstrasse, where office space was converted.

The fashion store "Bongénie" has opened on 4,000 square meters at Bahnhofstrasse 3 in Zurich. This is the successor to the Grieder fashion store, which until recently was located in the Griederhaus on Paradeplatz. The new space at the upper end of Bahnhofstrasse is combined with a two-storey catering business, the "Émile" restaurant. According to the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung", CHF 22 million was invested in the new store.
The history of the move begins with the sale of the Griederhaus to the Swatch Group in 2014, when CHF 420 million was paid according to earlier information. The owner family of the fashion house had bid at the time, but did not get the chance. The fashion house found its new location in 2022, the space there is around 1,000 square meters larger than at its original location. According to media reports, a 50-year lease agreement was concluded with the non-profit Baugarten Zurich foundation. The foundation has converted the building and partially converted it from office to retail.
The commercial building, which dates back to 1880 and was converted in the 1930s, also once served as the headquarters of the first Swiss stock exchange during its long history. The new conversion was planned by Studio Märkli and EBP, who won a project competition in 2014. The first floor was lowered to the level of Bahnhofstrasse. New basement floors were also created. Two attic storeys were added to the roof.
Bongénie is a family business with its origins in western Switzerland, which took over the Grieder fashion house in Zurich in the early 1970s and now operates 16 locations in Switzerland. (aw)
