Andermatt: Strong increase in interest from the USA according to report

As the Financial Times reports, there has recently been a massive increase in residential sales to US citizens. This is attributed to issues surrounding Donald Trump and his policies.

According to a report in the London "Financial Times", demand from US citizens for apartments in Andermatt has increased rapidly since the beginning of the year. There have been 1,260 inquiries from the United States and purchases have amounted to CHF 14.2 million. According to the FT, citing Andermatt Swiss Alps, this figure was less than half in the previous year. There was not a single American buyer in 2023. According to the report, a third of annual sales took place shortly before Easter in particular, i.e. just after US President Donald Trump announced his radical tariff plans. The FT quotes buyers as saying that the reason for their investment was safe real estate investments in Swiss francs and Trump's policies.

The mountain village of Andermatt, which has been developed into a resort by Egyptian entrepreneur Samih Sawiris, is exempt from the Lex Koller. Orascom Development Holding, which is controlled by his family, recently presented its figures for 2024, which also provide information on the business activities of its subsidiary Andermatt Swiss Alps. Purchases by US citizens do not yet play an explicit role in the figures. According to the annual report, contractually agreed property sales in Andermatt fell by over 8% in total last year.
