Urban settlement in Seefeld is coming

The planned Hornbach municipal housing development in Zurich's Seefeld district has cleared an important hurdle. The proposal for the construction of 122 apartments, childcare facilities, a workshop and commercial premises was approved with around 65.7 percent of votes in favor.

With 65.7% YES votes the Municipal Housing Policy was clearly confirmed

"In Seefeld, the housing market is going crazy. Who can pay 4,000 francs for a 4-room apartment? With the family apartments in the Hornbach housing estate, we are counteracting this so that normal earners can continue to live in District 8." -Niklaus Scherr, Municipal Councillor AL

Opponents of the project had argued, among other things, that the expensive land in Seefeld should not be used to build an urban settlement. Supporters on the other hand, were in favor of mixing the neighborhood.

The apartments have modest areas between 58 and 118 m². With 2 to 5 ½-room apartments, the aim is to achieve a good mix. The emphasis is on the middle range with 24 3½- and 69 4½-room apartments, which should attract families in particular. In addition, there are five attic studios with an area of 32 m² each, as well as two cluster apartments with 7 and 9 rooms and areas of 467 and 553 m² respectively.

A 2-bedroom apartment will cost about Fr. 1,200 per month unsupported, a 3½-bedroom apartment Fr. 1,500, a 4½-bedroom apartment Fr. 1,670, a 5½-bedroom apartment Fr. 1,880, and the cluster apartments Fr. 8,300 and Fr. 10,000, respectively. The unsupported rent for the roof studios will be about Fr. 930 per month. In addition, one third of the apartments will be subsidized. For these, the rent will be between 1,180 and 1,470 Fr. The subsidy will run through the "2011 housing campaign" approved by the municipality.
