200 new apartments for Basel's Breite district
The Basel City Council has given the green light for the "Albanteich-Promenade" project. The three owners of the site in Basel's Breite district - Allianz Suisse Lebensversicherungsgesellschaft AG, Assetimmo Immobilien-Anlagestiftung and De Bary & Co AG - want to add around 200 apartments to the existing development.

The government council of the Canton of Basel City has now approved the land use planning measures for the attention of the Grand Council.
The concept of Morger + Dettli Architekten allows for a densification that builds on the existing buildings, is in harmony with the historically valuable ensemble and largely preserves the existing green space, according to a media release of the council. The four existing high-rise buildings will remain unchanged, but will each be extended by an annex. According to the development plan, the six two-story low-rise buildings along Gellertstrasse can be replaced by three-story buildings with a slightly larger floor plan in the same location.
The existing development in the eastern Breite quarter, designed by Suter + Suter Architekten, is considered an important architectural testimony of the 1960s. The four high-rise disc buildings and six apartment buildings are located in the middle of a park-like environment. The development was built in 1960 on the site of the De Bary ribbon factory. Today, it comprises a total of around 570 apartments, stores and a kindergarten.
Five objections have been lodged against the extension; the Government Council asks the Grand Council to reject them. (ah)
