Building permit for "The Myrrhen
Planning permission has now been granted for the apartment hotel "The Myrrhen" planned in Mürren. The controversial CHF 30 million project is backed by the Schilthorn Railway, Steiner AG and the MHBD Swiss Resort Management of former Swiss Tourism Director Marco Hartmann.

Thirteen objections to the project were received, including a collective objection with around 530 signatures. The main criticism was the scale of the construction volume. The objections were rejected by Martin Künzi, the governor. According to Künzi, the project was the result of a lengthy planning process with a qualified architectural competition and both the competition jury as well as the cantonal monument preservation authority and the Bernese Heritage Society had assessed the building project as "clearly the best solution" and the "only possible variant for such a building volume at this location".
In addition, it was particularly controversial whether the construction project met the requirements stipulated in the legislation on second homes for so-called structured accommodation establishments. In particular, it was and is disputed whether the planned resort offers sufficient hotel-like infrastructure and services. In the opinion of the cantonal governor, the project meets the requirements of the Second Homes Act: it comprises 76 tourist apartments with 262 beds in four new apartment buildings, with plans to install a reception and lobby as well as a breakfast room in the existing "Alte Post" building. According to Künzi, the developer has also agreed to legally secure external infrastructure on a permanent basis with corresponding land register entries. This includes services that partners such as the Sportchalet Mürren and the Alpine Sports Center Mürren are to provide.
Initial test planning for the project began in 2011 and subsequently had to be redesigned several times. In 2013, Steiner AG held a qualified architectural competition in which six offices took part. In spring 2014, the current building project emerged as the winner of this competition. (ah)
