Bern: SPS to build new housing estate
A new housing development with around 175 apartments is to be built on the Weltpoststrasse Nord site in Bern. The landowner, Burgergemeinde Bern, has transferred the site to Swiss Prime Site AG (SPS) under a building lease.
The Weltpoststrasse Nord site is located on the A6 freeway between the Murifeld housing estate and the former Credit Suisse office buildings. It is to be transformed from a working to a residential location.
The plan is to build three six-story residential blocks with a total of about 175 apartments for around 340 people. The superstructure regulations stipulate that at least 70 percent of the heat supply must come from renewable energy sources, and that at least one-third of the apartments, or 6,100 square meters of above-ground floor space, will be reserved for affordable rental housing. In addition, SPS has committed to realizing the superstructure in accordance with the SIA energy efficiency path to achieve the goals of the 2000-watt society.
If the city council and the voters approve the zoning ordinance, a building permit procedure for the specific construction project is expected to be carried out in 2017. The first apartments are scheduled to be occupied in 2019. (ah)
