Basel: Green light for conversion of Felix Platter Hospital
The planned residential development on the site of the Felix Platter Hospital in Basel can be realized. The Grand Council, Basel's cantonal and city parliament, has almost unanimously approved the rezoning and the first development plan in a landmark decision.

Around 500 to 550 new apartments are to be built on the site of the Felix Platter Hospital at Burgfelderstrasse 101. Once the hospital has moved into a new building, probably by April 2019 at the latest, the old building is to be converted. Around 130 apartments alone are to be built in the 100-metre-long and 35-metre-high main hospital building, while semi-public and public uses are also planned for the basement. Some outbuildings will be demolished and replaced by new, maximum eight-storey residential buildings. The canton intends to hand over the land to housing cooperatives under building rights.
The urban planning framework for the site should be in place by 2017. The individual building plots could be planned from 2018 and the first residential buildings could be built from 2019. (ah)
