Homegate rent index: minimal increase in asking rents

In December 2017, asking rents in Switzerland rose by 0.26 percent. This is revealed by the new rent index of the real estate portal Homegate.

The asking rent index, which is compiled by Homegate together with Zürcher Kantonalbank (ZKB), stood at 113.9 points in December 2017, up 0.26 percent on the previous month. Compared with December 2016, rents fell by 0.09 percent. The biggest growth was in the canton of Zurich, with an increase of 0.6 percent.

The changes in the cantons surveyed varied: In St. Gallen, the index level stagnated at 111.9 points. Rents rose in the cantons of Zurich (+0.6%), Bern (+0.18%), Lucerne (+0.17%) and Solothurn, Basel, Aargau and Thurgau (+0.09% in each case), while Geneva and Vaud also saw increases (+0.88%). In Ticino, however, asking rents fell by 0.47%.

The asking rent index measures the monthly change in rents for new and re-let apartments based on current market offers. The data are adjusted for differences in the quality, location and size of the apartments.
