Retail trade: sales rise again

Sales in the Swiss retail sector increased by 0.2 percent year-on-year in nominal terms in November 2016. This is the first increase since December 2014.

Adjusted for seasonal effects, nominal sales in the retail trade increased by 0.4 percent compared with the previous month. This is shown by the provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

Real retail sales adjusted for sales and holiday effects increased by 0.9 percent year-on-year in November 2016. Compared with the previous month, real sales rose by a seasonally adjusted 0.7 percent. The real development takes into account inflation

Non-food sales stable

Adjusted for sales and holiday effects, retail trade excluding service stations recorded growth in nominal sales of 0.1 percent in November 2016 compared with November 2015 (+0.8% in real terms). Retail trade of food, beverages and tobacco recorded an increase in nominal sales of 0.3 percent (-0.2% in real terms). The non-food sector registered zero nominal growth (+2.0% in real terms).

Adjusted for seasonal effects, retail trade excluding service stations recorded nominal sales growth of 0.4 percent in November compared with the previous month (+0.9% in real terms). The food, beverages and tobacco trade recorded a nominal increase in sales of 0.1 percent (+0.2% in real terms). The non-food sector registered a nominal increase of 1.0 percent (+1.9% in real terms), according to the FSO.
