Retail: Muji plans market entry in Switzerland

According to a media report, Japanese lifestyle brand Muji plans to open its first store in Switzerland next year - and more could follow.

How first the Switzerland at the weekend reported, Muji plans to open its first Swiss store in Glatt-Zentrum in October 2019. Around 1,000 square meters of sales space are planned, and the offering is to include the full range of products - stationery, office supplies, cosmetics, household appliances, clothing and furniture. If the market launch is successful, further stores are planned.

Parent company Ryohin Keikaku plans to establish Muji Switzerland AG in early 2019 for market entry, the newspaper writes, citing a statement published in Japan.

The company's first store opened in Tokyo in 1983, followed by expansion abroad in the 1990s. Since 2005, the company has been present in neighboring Germany: There are seven lifestyle stores - one each in Düsseldorf, Munich, Cologne, Hamburg and Frankfurt, and two in Berlin.

Products from Muji are considered high quality and functional, but simple and minimalist design. Many famous designers have worked for the group, but always anonymously. Because Muji, a short form of Mujirushi Ryōhin, means translated: No brand, good products. (ah)
