According to Migros, Liegenschaften-Betrieb AG (LiB-AG), which is part of the group and owns the property at Marktplatz 1 leased by Globus, has submitted a general building application to the city of Basel for a comprehensive renovation of the historic department store.

The department store, which is rich in tradition and offers one of the largest retail trade areas in Basel's city center, consists of various properties from different eras and has been continuously changed and expanded over time. The general condition of the building fabric and the technical installations make a comprehensive renewal necessary, it is said.

The further details of the conversion work and the next steps are to be worked out in a later phase. According to Migros, the Basel-based architectural firm Miller Maranta will develop the measures "with great respect for the history of the building and the location in the heart of Basel"; the construction project should meet the highest requirements in terms of logistics, energy and sustainability.

The investment will be made irrespective of whether the recently announced sale of the Globus department stores (we reported) will take place with or without real estate. (bw)
