The Basel Civil Engineering Office has announced that Freie Strasse and the adjoining Rüdenstrasse, Streitstrasse, Kaufhausstrasse and Barfüssergasse will be renovated in a total of five stages. The first stage will start in August this year at the Bankverein. In total, the work will take around three years and is expected to cost CHF 25 million.

The plan is to remove all pavement edges and lay continuous slabs of quartz sandstone across the entire width of the street. Kaufhaus- and Barfüssergasse are to be paved with polished Rheinwacken, the report continues. Industriellen Werke Basel (IWB) wants to use the upcoming work to supply the properties with new district heating. (ah)
