Sweden: Implenia builds bus station in a mountain

Implenia has received an unusual order from the city of Stockholm. The company is to build a bus station inside Katarina Mountain.

The project is part of the fundamental redesign of the central Slussen transport hub and has a contract volume of around CHF 80 million, Implenia says.

The future bus station will consist of three rock chambers up to 24 meters high. Around 270,000 cubic meters will have to be blasted and excavated for this. In addition to the excavation work, Implenia is responsible for the construction of ramp tunnels, connecting tunnels and drainage tunnels.

Construction is due to start this month, with completion scheduled for June 2021. This will be followed by the interior work, which Implenia has not been commissioned to carry out. The new bus station is scheduled to open in 2023. (ah)
