Topping out for Implenia project in Berlin

Implenia, as the executing construction services provider, celebrated the topping out of the Museum Island subway station in Berlin with the client Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG).

The Museum Island subway station is part of the "Lückenschluss U5" project, one of the largest transportation infrastructure projects in the city of Berlin. This involves extending the existing U5 subway line from Alexanderplatz to Brandenburg Gate and merging it with the existing U55 line. A total of three new subway stations are being built. Directly above the Museumsinsel station is the Spree Canal and the two listed buildings Schlossbrücke and Bertelsmann-Repräsentanz. This subproject is therefore considered to be particularly challenging from a technical point of view.

After the tunnel boring machine had passed through, the subsoil between Humboldt Forum and Kronprinzenpalais was frozen at a volume of 28,000 cubic meters. This allowed the platform area around the tunnel tubes to be excavated without allowing groundwater to penetrate. According to Implenia, this was the largest inner-city ground freeze in Europe to date.

Implenia's contract includes the construction of two parallel tubes, each 1.7 kilometers long, a track change facility, and the shell of the Unter den Linden and Museumsinsel stations.

Various dismantling measures and road construction work will still be carried out until October 2020. The new subway line and the two stations Rotes Rathaus and Unter den Linden are scheduled to go into operation at the end of the year. The Museum Island station is expected to follow in summer 2021.

The subway station was designed by renowned architect Max Dudler and has the "eternal night" as its theme. With the help of a luminous ultramarine blue and 6,662 light points, the subway station will shine like a starry sky in the future. (ah)
