Implenia builds light rail in Düsseldorf
Implenia is to build a new light rail line in Düsseldorf. The contract is worth the equivalent of CHF 47 million.

The North Rhine-Westphalian state capital of Düsseldorf has awarded Implenia two lots in the construction of the new U81 light rail line. The new line will connect Düsseldorf's main station with the airport and the Düsseldorf Exhibition Center. Part of the first section of the line in the north of the city will run over existing tracks from Freiligrathplatz to the north, the construction company says. Branching off from this route, the new line will cross the Nordstern traffic junction at high level and continue toward the airport. There, an underground station is to be built at the terminal.
According to a statement from Implenia, the bidding consortium Implenia, Wayss & Freytag and MCE has been awarded Lot 1 of the construction measure, while the bidding consortium Implenia and Wayss & Freytag has been awarded Lot 2. Implenia will be responsible for the commercial management of both lots. The total contract value amounts to €113 million (CHF119 million), with Implenia's share at €45 million (CHF47 million), according to the company.
Construction started at the end of May and is scheduled for completion in 2023. (ah)
