Implenia's consortium wins contract for Gotthard tunnel project
The "Secondo Tubo" consortium of Implenia, Webuild Group/CSC and Frutiger is to construct a 4 km long access tunnel for the second Gotthard tube. The Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) has awarded the contract worth CHF 86.6 million.
The north access tunnel is used to access the so-called north fault zone, and the lot also includes various preparatory logistics excavations for the main lot, says Implenia. In addition to various galleries, this also includes a large logistics cavern for an underground concrete plant, the preliminary cut for the second tunnel tube and various installations for materials management.
The "Secondo Tubo" consortium, in which the lead company Implenia is involved in 40%, Webuild Group/CSC in another 40% and Frutiger in 20%, won the contract with the highest score from the evaluation of all award criteria against four other bids and two additional variants. The award is still subject to a 20-day appeal period. Construction is expected to begin this spring. The work will take around 2.5 years.
This is the second lot for the construction of the second tube of the Gotthard road tunnel that Implenia has won. In November 2020, the company was already awarded the contract for relocating the north safety tunnel (Lot 242). Prior to this, Implenia played a key role in the construction of the Gotthard Base Tunnel for the railroads between 2001 and 2014 at a total cost of 2.84 billion.
