Christoph Schumacher has joined Manulife Investment Management, effective May 17, the Boston-based company announced the same day. In this newly created position, the real estate expert will develop private real estate investment strategy, manage operations and be responsible for the development, launch and growth of investment solutions for clients around the world. Schumacher will oversee $42.9 billion in assets globally, he said, and Manulife's individual real asset team leaders will report directly to him.

The reason for Schumacher's appointment is the growing business in the private markets sector and increasing client interest in investing in alternative asset classes, Manulife Investment Management said. "Christoph shares our vision of unifying our global real assets business and growing together," said Steve Blewitt, global head of private markets.

Schumacher had been Global Head Real Estate at Credit Suisse since 2017; his successor in this position is Raymond Rüttimann. Before joining Credit Suisse, Schumacher was, among other things, Managing Director of Union Investment Institutional Property in Hamburg and Head of International Investments at Generali Immobiliare in Cologne and Paris, which belongs to the insurer Generali.
